August 22 Trip Report

Report by Bruce LaBar

Starting out of the harbor at 0600 under partly cloudy skies, we were greeted with heavy bar action between the jettys. After alot of bouncing, we had a pretty good day. We started to get into the Sooty Shearwater and Common Murre zone when we encountered two sightings of Manx Shearwater. As we continued further out to sea, the Pink-footed Shearwater numbers rose to almost match our day totals of Sooties. Final score PF's 2434 to SO's 3039. Other highlights include the following: Flesh-footed Shearwater-2, Buller's Shearwater-28, South Polar Skua-5 and Long-tailed Jaeger-2. As we came back to shore we spotted the summering Glaucous Gull. Mammal highlights were three Orcas, four Humpbacked Whales and one Gray Whale.
